Employers’ Liability Insurance and ERN Requirements
A large proportion of registered netball groups are run by unpaid volunteers. However, if you employ staff who are paid above the PAYE threshold, your insurer is required to submit your Employer Reference Number (ERN) to the Employers’ Liability Database (ELD), managed by the Employers’ Liability Tracing Office (ELTO). This ensures that anyone affected by a work‑related illness or injury can trace your insurance efficiently.
Insurers typically won’t issue Employers’ Liability cover unless either:
Your organisation supplies an ERN (if you have one), or
Confirms that you're exempt (see criteria below).
Are you exempt?
You do not need to provide an ERN if:
You have no paid employees, or
All employees earn below the PAYE threshold, or
You’re not registered in the UK (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland).
Additional Information is available from the ELTO webiste: http://www.elto.org.uk/
