Like many areas of Diversity and Belonging, appropriate language can make a huge difference when welcoming the LGBTQ+ community within netball. Whilst language is a continuously developing area, the guide below has been created to support you.
In 2025, England Netball implemented our updated ‘Gender Eligibility and Participation Policy’. Mindful of what an emotive topic this is for many, we worked to create a policy that met the needs of our members whilst providing opportunities for all to compete as their authentic selves. You can view the policy in full along with supporting guidance and a range of FAQ’s via the link below.
Transgender Inclusion in Netball
Providing inclusive opportunities for transgender people following the updated Gender Eligibility and Participation Policy.
Details have been anonymised at the participant's request.
Background
In 2025 England Netball updated the Gender Eligibility and Participation Policy with 3 distinct competition categories: Male, Female and Mixed.
The 'Mixed' category is intended to be inclusive, meaning individuals can participate as per their gender identity. Mixed sessions can advertise for women and those who identified as such, allowing individuals to make an informed decision about joining.
What was done?
A group of trans women participated in walking netball for the first time as part of an inclusive physical activity initiative. The session was adapted to be welcoming and accessible, with clear explanations of the rules, a supportive environment, and encouragement from coaches and other participants. Emphasis was placed on inclusion, enjoyment, and teamwork rather than competition. Participants were supported to join at their own pace and were reassured that no prior netball experience was required.
What impact did it have?
The impact was positive all of the women taking part in the session, both transgender and cisgender. Trans participants reported increased confidence, enjoyment, and a sense of belonging. Being able to take part in a group sport helped reduce feelings of isolation and anxiety around accessing public or gendered spaces. For cisgender players and coaches, the session increased awareness and understanding of trans inclusion in sport, helping to challenge stereotypes and create a more accepting community environment.
What challenges were there?
Some participants felt nervous before attending, particularly due to previous negative experiences in sports. There was initial uncertainty around rules and confidence levels, especially for those new to netball. These challenges were addressed through reassurance, patience, and peer support. Ensuring ongoing inclusion and maintaining a safe environment remains important as the group grows.
What did participants say?
“I never thought I’d feel comfortable joining a team sport, but everyone was so welcoming, it made me feel like I belonged.”
“It was nice to be seen as just another player, not singled out.”
Developed in partnership between LGBT Youth NW and Pride Sports, this guide provides information about the experiences of young LGBTQ+ people in sport.
It also provides useful tips about how to market appropriately, create a welcoming environment and challenge inappropriate behaviour.
